US stocks ended slightly lower on Friday as investors weighed economic worries against optimism over interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve after data showed U.S. job growth weakened sharply in August.

Bank shares were among those taking the biggest hit, with the S&amp;P 500 bank index ending 2.4% lower.

However, Broadcom shares rose 9.4%, helping to offset market losses, a day after the chipmaker unveiled a $10 billion artificial intelligence chip order from a new customer and forecast fourth-quarter revenue above estimates.

The U.S. economy created 22,000 jobs last month instead of an estimated 75,000, confirming softening labor market conditions, according to the Labor Department report.

The three major U.S. stock indexes initially rose and broke records following the data, as traders of futures tied to the Fed's policy rate boosted bets that the U.S. central bank will trim rates in quick succession, starting this month, with a 50-basis-point easing now on the table.
The major indexes ended well off their lows of the session.

"It's going to take more than one bad data set for us to dislodge this market at this point," said Pete Mulmat, CEO of IG North America, parent company of tastytrade, in Chicago.

With so much focus on the rate outlook, U.S. stock investors will pay close attention to inflation data in the coming week. The monthly U.S. consumer price index is due on Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 220.43 points, or 0.48%, to 45,400.86, the S&amp;P 500 lost 20.58 points, or 0.32%, to 6,481.50 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 7.31 points, or 0.03%, to 21,700.39.

For the week, the Dow fell 0.3%, the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.3% and the Nasdaq rose 1.1%.

"The payroll report today confirms a softening labor market and justifies a rate cut at the Fed meeting later this month," said Bill Merz, head of capital markets research and portfolio construction at U.S. Bank Asset Management in Minneapolis.

"The labor market is going to remain a very important indicator for how this economic picture plays out, but so far consumer spending has really surprised many people despite softening in the labor market."

BofA Global Research also adjusted its outlook following the report, forecasting one quarter-point cut each in September and December.

The U.S. rate futures market has priced in a 7% chance that the Fed will cut by 50 bps when it meets on September 16-17, and a 93% probability of the more standard 25 bp cut, according to LSEG calculations.

The rate-cut expectations helped the real estate sector (.SPLRCR), opens new tab end 1% higher, and the Philadelphia Housing Index jump 2.1%.

Shares of Kenvue fell 9.3% after the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter without including evidence, that U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to announce that use of Kenvue's pain medication Tylenol in pregnant women is potentially linked to autism.

Among other decliners, Lululemon Athletica dropped 18.6% after the yogawear-maker slashed its annual profit forecast the second time in a row.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.87-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 508 new highs and 64 new lows on the NYSE.

On the Nasdaq, 2,704 stocks rose and 1,899 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.42-to-1 ratio.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 16.95 billion shares, compared with the 16.05 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

A U.S. tariff exemption for package imports valued under $800 also ended on Friday, raising costs for businesses and, in turn, consumers.

Traders widely expect the Fed will cut interest rates by 25 basis points at its September meeting.

"Even if we see an uptick in inflation, which it looks like we are, the Fed may look past that, given that this is going to be tariff-related and temporary," said Jim Smigiel, chief investment officer at SEI.

The U.S. stock market will be closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

The blue-chip Dow Jones ended higher after hitting an intraday record high on Friday, as UnitedHealth's shares jumped after Berkshire Hathaway raised its stake, but other Wall Street indexes slipped as mixed data clouded the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy move.

A meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin was also on the radar, with markets hoping it could pave the way for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict and determine the outlook for crude prices. The two leaders began a meeting in Alaska on Friday afternoon.

UnitedHealth Group rose almost 12%, its biggest single-day percentage rise since March 2020, after Warren Buffett's company revealed a new investment in the health insurer, while Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management also turned more bullish on the company.

Rising costs in the broader healthcare sector and about a 40% slump in UnitedHealth's shares this year have left the Dow lagging its Wall Street peers on the road to record highs. The price-weighted index last scaled an all-time high on December 4.

The healthcare sector gained 1.65% on Friday, tracking its best weekly performance since October 2022.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 34.86 points, or 0.08%, to 44,946.12, the S&amp;P 500 lost 18.74 points, or 0.29%, to 6,449.80 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 87.69 points, or 0.40%, to 21,622.98.

More broadly, Wall Street's main stock indexes recorded their second week of gains, buoyed by expectations that the Fed could restart its monetary policy easing cycle with a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in September.

The central bank last lowered borrowing costs in December and said U.S. tariffs could add to price pressures. However, recent labor market weakness and signs that tariff-induced inflation was yet to reflect in headline consumer prices have made investors confident of a potential dovish move next month.

"The question is, has the tariff gotten into the price of goods yet? And it appears that there hasn't," said Joe Saluzzi, co-head of equity trading at Themis Trading.

Saluzzi also said while markets have largely priced in a September rate cut, investors might be overlooking risks, with low volatility and rich valuations pointing to a sense of complacency.

In a mixed day for economic data, a report showed retail sales in July rose as expected, but consumer confidence and factory production numbers indicated tariffs were taking a toll on other pockets of the economy.

"Today is a normal pullback given the recent strong gains," said Eric Teal, chief investment officer at Comerica Wealth Management.

"We will have to wait for the personal consumption expenditures data which the Fed prefers and has been running a bit hotter than CPI of late to see how much inflation is finding its way into the system."

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee was also cautionary in his remarks.

Intel rose 2.9% after a report said the Trump administration was in talks for the U.S. government to potentially take a stake in the chipmaker.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.3-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 244 new highs and 45 new lows on the NYSE.

On the Nasdaq, declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.36-to-1 ratio.

The S&amp;P 500 posted 10 new 52-week highs and no new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 79 new highs and 81 new lows.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was relatively light, with 16.3 billion shares traded, compared to an average of 18.2 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions.

For the week, the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.94%, the Nasdaq rose 0.81%, and the Dow climbed 1.74%. The Russell 2000 Small Cap Index rose 3.13%.

The blue-chip Dow Jones ended higher after hitting an intraday record high on Friday, as UnitedHealth's shares jumped after Berkshire Hathaway raised its stake, but other Wall Street indexes slipped as mixed data clouded the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy move.

A meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin was also on the radar, with markets hoping it could pave the way for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict and determine the outlook for crude prices. The two leaders began a meeting in Alaska on Friday afternoon.

UnitedHealth Group rose almost 12%, its biggest single-day percentage rise since March 2020, after Warren Buffett's company revealed a new investment in the health insurer, while Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management also turned more bullish on the company.

Rising costs in the broader healthcare sector and about a 40% slump in UnitedHealth's shares this year have left the Dow lagging its Wall Street peers on the road to record highs. The price-weighted index last scaled an all-time high on December 4.

The healthcare sector gained 1.65% on Friday, tracking its best weekly performance since October 2022.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 34.86 points, or 0.08%, to 44,946.12, the S&amp;amp;P 500 lost 18.74 points, or 0.29%, to 6,449.80 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 87.69 points, or 0.40%, to 21,622.98.

More broadly, Wall Street's main stock indexes recorded their second week of gains, buoyed by expectations that the Fed could restart its monetary policy easing cycle with a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in September.

The central bank last lowered borrowing costs in December and said U.S. tariffs could add to price pressures. However, recent labor market weakness and signs that tariff-induced inflation was yet to reflect in headline consumer prices have made investors confident of a potential dovish move next month.

&quot;The question is, has the tariff gotten into the price of goods yet? And it appears that there hasn't,&quot; said Joe Saluzzi, co-head of equity trading at Themis Trading.

Saluzzi also said while markets have largely priced in a September rate cut, investors might be overlooking risks, with low volatility and rich valuations pointing to a sense of complacency.

In a mixed day for economic data, a report showed retail sales in July rose as expected, but consumer confidence and factory production numbers indicated tariffs were taking a toll on other pockets of the economy.

&quot;Today is a normal pullback given the recent strong gains,&quot; said Eric Teal, chief investment officer at Comerica Wealth Management.

&quot;We will have to wait for the personal consumption expenditures data which the Fed prefers and has been running a bit hotter than CPI of late to see how much inflation is finding its way into the system.&quot;

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee was also cautionary in his remarks.

"There’s no way to pretty-up this report. Previous months were revised significantly lower where the labor market has been on stall-speed," said Brian Jacobsen, Chief Economist at Annex Wealth Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.

"Last year the Fed messed up by not cutting in July so they did a catch-up cut at their next meeting. They’ll likely have to do the same thing this year."

Market expectations the Fed will cut rates by at least 25 basis points at its September meeting stood at 86.5%, according to CME's FedWatch Tool, opens new tab, up from 37.7% in the prior session.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 542.40 points, or 1.23%, to 43,588.58, the S&amp;P 500 lost 101.38 points, or 1.60%, to 6,238.01 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 472.32 points, or 2.24%, to 20,650.13.

The S&amp;P 500 recorded its biggest single-day percentage decline since May 21 while the Nasdaq suffered its biggest daily percentage drop since April 21.

For the week, the S&amp;P 500 fell 2.36%, the Nasdaq declined 2.17%, and the Dow fell 2.92%.

The CBOE Volatility Index, also known as Wall Street's fear gauge, closed up 3.66 points at 20.38, its highest close since June 20.

"(Trump) didn't seem to be disappointed with the last five jobs reports," said Art Hogan, Chief Market Strategist, B. Riley Wealth, Boston, saying that the firing stood out as irregular.

"I think this is clearly something that happens in dictatorships, not in democracies.”

The Federal Reserve said Governor Adriana Kugler is resigning early from her term and will exit the central bank on Aug. 8, enabling President Donald Trump to select a new governor as he has ramped up pressure against Chair Jerome Powell recently to cut interest rates.
