Wall Street's main stock indexes closed higher on Wednesday, with the biggest boost from the healthcare sector, as investors looked past weaker-than-expected private payrolls data and uncertainty around the first day of the U.S. federal government shutdown.

With the Labor Department's September jobs report expected to be postponed if the government has not reopened by Friday, investors were paying close attention to the ADP National Employment Report.

ADP showed a decline in private payrolls of 32,000 and a downwardly revised 3,000 decline in August. These numbers were weaker than economist forecasts for growth of 50,000 in September and the prior report of a 54,000 advance in August.

Elsewhere in economic data, the Institute for Supply Management showed U.S. manufacturing edged toward recovery in September.

After opening lower, all three main U.S. indexes advanced. Among the S&amp;P 500's 11 major industry sectors, the biggest gainer was S&amp;P 500 healthcare (.SPXHC), opens new tab, boosted by pharmaceutical companies.

The healthcare rally started in earnest on Tuesday after Pfizer (PFE.N), opens new tab and U.S. President Donald Trump said they had cut a deal. The drugmaker agreed to lower prescription drug prices in the Medicaid program - compared to its charges in other developed countries - in exchange for tariff relief. Trump said he expected more drug companies to follow suit.

"Yesterday was the catalyst for healthcare," said Lara Castleton, U.S. head of portfolio construction and strategy at Janus Henderson Investors, adding that the sector was probably ripe for a rally after underperforming the rest of the market so far this year.

"People have not necessarily been avoiding it, but they have not been as heavily allocated into healthcare as they have been in technology and all the AI hype," she said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 43.21 points, or 0.09%, to 46,441.10, the S&amp;P 500 gained 22.74 points, or 0.34%, to 6,711.20 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 95.15 points, or 0.42%, to 22,755.16.

The S&amp;P 500 tech sector provided the second biggest boost for the benchmark index, with Micron rallying 8.9% and the broader Philadelphia chip index adding 2%.

The sector with the biggest percentage decline during the session was materials, which ended the day down more than 1%.

The healthcare sector's biggest gainers were Biogen, up 10.9% and Thermo Fisher, up 9.4%.

Castleton noted that equity investors appeared to be shrugging off uncertainties around the shutdown. Markets have historically been resilient during government closures.

The S&amp;P 500 rose during each of the last six shutdowns, according to a note from Deutsche Bank. During the last government closure between the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, indexes were able to advance.

In individual stocks, a 16.8% rally in shares of AES made it the biggest gainer in the benchmark index and a strong boost for the S&amp;P 500 utilities sector. This was after the Financial Times reported that BlackRock-owned Global Infrastructure Partners was nearing a $38-billion deal to acquire the utility group.

While the materials sector was broadly weaker, Lithium Americas Corp U.S. shares rallied 23.3% and rival Albemarle closed up 4.2%. The U.S. Department of Energy has taken a 5% stake in Lithium Americas and a separate 5% stake in the company's joint venture with General Motors Corteva, said it would separate its seed and pesticide businesses into separate publicly traded companies, sending its shares down 9%.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.92-to-1 ratio on the NYSE where there were 580 new highs and 99 new lows.

On the Nasdaq, 2,707 stocks rose and 2,003 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.35-to-1 ratio.

The S&amp;P 500 posted 37 new 52-week highs and 7 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 111 new highs and 68 new lows.

Volume wise, on U.S. exchanges 19.79 billion shares changed hands compared with the 20-day moving average of 18.62 billion.

Consumer spending climbed slightly more than expected in August while the inflation rate rose to 2.7% from 2.6% in July, data showed, in line with economists' expectations.

Analysts said some companies had fended off price pressures by stockpiling in anticipation of tariffs, but some volatility was to be expected ahead of corporate earnings releases in the coming weeks.

"Corporates have been able to withstand (a) tariff hit because they've had inventory build. But the earnings season will become the bigger test because many companies have told us they will start some price increases around the end of the year," said Kevin Gordon, senior investment strategist at Charles Schwab.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.65%, the S&amp;P 500 rose 0.59% and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.44%.

Individual stocks responded to fresh White House tariffs on goods including pharmaceuticals and trucks. Paccar, which makes most of its trucks for the U.S. market domestically, gained 5%, and drugmaker Eli Lilly rose 1.5%.

"The one bright spot was that income and spending were a little bit firmer than expected, which means the consumer isn't falling off a cliff as the market was expecting," said Gennadiy Goldberg, head of U.S. rates strategy at TD Securities.

Gold, a safe haven which usually benefits from lower interest rates, broadly held on to recent gains. Spot prices were last quoted 0.46% higher at $3,766.25 an ounce.
Investors now estimate an 89.8% probability of a rate cut in October and a 67% chance of another in December, the CME FedWatch Tool shows.

"Markets have done exceptionally well and now markets are looking for the next driver or the next bit of news," Farr said. "I think as we probably get into earnings season in October, those reports will be more important than ever because we need to see and the Fed needs to see if tariffs are indeed making their way into bottom-line profits."

The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 2.5 basis points to 4.129%. The 2-year note yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations for the Fed, rose 0.6 basis points to 3.574%.

"The short-term momentum is clearly higher and we are playing the market to the upside because that's what the short-term momentum is telling you," said Bill Strazzullo, partner and chief market strategist at Bell Curve Trading in Boston.

"But I think it's a lot more complicated now because the Fed clearly has chosen to err on the side of the weaker labor market so that's talking about more rate cuts."

Tesla jumped 7.4% after board chair Robyn Denholm dismissed concerns that CEO Elon Musk's political activity had hurt sales at the electric-vehicle maker and said the billionaire was &quot;front and center&quot; at the company after several months at the White House. With Friday's surge, Tesla shares remain down 2% in 2025.

Declines in Goldman Sachs and paint-maker Sherwin-Williams kept the Dow Jones Industrial Average in negative territory. The S&amp;amp;P 500 declined marginally.

The University of Michigan's survey showed U.S. consumer sentiment fell for a second straight month in September as consumers saw rising risks to business conditions, the labor market and inflation.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 declined 0.05% to end the session at 6,584.29 points.

The Nasdaq gained 0.45% to 22,141.10 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.59% to 45,834.22 points.

Seven of the 11 S&amp;amp;P 500 sector indexes declined, led lower by health care, down 1.13%, followed by a 0.97% loss in materials (.SPLRCM), opens new tab.

Following signs of a worsening jobs market, interest rate futures reflect expectations of cuts totaling 75 basis points by the end of the year.

For the week, the S&amp;amp;P 500 rose 1.6%, the Dow climbed almost 1% and the Nasdaq added 2%, helped by a revival in artificial intelligence trade after cloud computing giant Oracle's strong forecast on Tuesday.

Warner Bros Discovery jumped 17%, extending a surge from Wednesday, when a source said Paramount Skydance was preparing a bid for the struggling media company.

Shares of vaccine makers fell after a report said U.S. health officials are planning to link coronavirus vaccines to the deaths of 25 children. Moderna declined 7.4%, while Pfizer and Novavax both lost more than 3%.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones within the S&amp;amp;P 500 by a 3.3-to-one ratio.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 posted 22 new highs and 3 new lows; the Nasdaq recorded 106 new highs and 43 new lows.

The three major U.S. stock indexes initially rose and broke records following the data, as traders of futures tied to the Fed's policy rate boosted bets that the U.S. central bank will trim rates in quick succession, starting this month, with a 50-basis-point easing now on the table.
The major indexes ended well off their lows of the session.

"It's going to take more than one bad data set for us to dislodge this market at this point," said Pete Mulmat, CEO of IG North America, parent company of tastytrade, in Chicago.

With so much focus on the rate outlook, U.S. stock investors will pay close attention to inflation data in the coming week. The monthly U.S. consumer price index is due on Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 220.43 points, or 0.48%, to 45,400.86, the S&amp;P 500 lost 20.58 points, or 0.32%, to 6,481.50 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 7.31 points, or 0.03%, to 21,700.39.

For the week, the Dow fell 0.3%, the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.3% and the Nasdaq rose 1.1%.

"The payroll report today confirms a softening labor market and justifies a rate cut at the Fed meeting later this month," said Bill Merz, head of capital markets research and portfolio construction at U.S. Bank Asset Management in Minneapolis.

"The labor market is going to remain a very important indicator for how this economic picture plays out, but so far consumer spending has really surprised many people despite softening in the labor market."

BofA Global Research also adjusted its outlook following the report, forecasting one quarter-point cut each in September and December.

The U.S. rate futures market has priced in a 7% chance that the Fed will cut by 50 bps when it meets on September 16-17, and a 93% probability of the more standard 25 bp cut, according to LSEG calculations.

The rate-cut expectations helped the real estate sector (.SPLRCR), opens new tab end 1% higher, and the Philadelphia Housing Index jump 2.1%.

Shares of Kenvue fell 9.3% after the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter without including evidence, that U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to announce that use of Kenvue's pain medication Tylenol in pregnant women is potentially linked to autism.

Among other decliners, Lululemon Athletica dropped 18.6% after the yogawear-maker slashed its annual profit forecast the second time in a row.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.87-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 508 new highs and 64 new lows on the NYSE.

On the Nasdaq, 2,704 stocks rose and 1,899 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.42-to-1 ratio.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 16.95 billion shares, compared with the 16.05 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
