Neeraj Chopra FAQs

Neeraj Chopra is an Indian javelin thrower and the country's most iconic track-and-field athlete. Born in Khandra, Haryana, he made history by becoming India’s first-ever Olympic gold medallist in athletics at Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021). His meteoric rise began with a world junior record in 2016 and continued with multiple international podium finishes.

Neeraj’s success stems from a blend of raw talent, consistent training, and technical refinement—particularly in his run-up, power position, and follow-through. His biomechanics, arm speed, and mental focus enable regular throws in the 87–90 m range. He’s also been ranked the top male javelin thrower in the world for 2024 by Track and Field News, despite facing strong global rivals.
Neeraj trained early under coach Naseem Ahmed at Panchkula’s Athletics Nursery. He’s expressed admiration for javelin legend Jan Železný, whose techniques greatly influenced him. More recently, Železný has been involved in guiding Chopra's technical development. Neeraj credits his parents and coaches for their unwavering support.
Recent Highlight: In May 2025, Chopra threw 90.23 m at the Doha Diamond League, setting both a personal and national record, and received a congratulatory message from India’s Prime Minister.
