Gujarat Titans close out the game as they beat Mumbai Indians by 6 runs. An epic game comes to an end as MI lost wickets at regular intervals as the dot ball pressure got to them. Full credit to the GT bowlers but also Shubman Gill for expertly marshalling his troops in his captaincy debut.

An all round performance from GT sees them take the bragging rights in this exciting match in front fof their home ground.

Umesh Yadav picks Piyush Chawla in the first ball. The left hander smashes a pull shot straight to Rashid Khan at mid wicket, who safely pouches the catch. This is a roller coaster of a match. MI need 9 runs of the last 2 balls.

What a superb comeback from Spencer Johnson! David pulls a slow bouncer to the mid wicket region but the lack of pace meant it didn't go anywhere close to its intended destination; the crowd. The ball was dying and David Miller from deep mid wicket had to run in towards the ball; the South African dives and pulls off a stunner. MI are 142/5 after 18

Rashid Khan puts out another masterclass as he concedes only 3 runs in the 17th over. Khan might have gone wicketless but his tidy bowling has put GT in the driver's seat. He ends with figures of 0/23 from his 4 overs as MI are 133/4 in 17 overs. They still need 36 runs to win in 3 overs

The young South African batter is caught and bowled by Mohit Sharma for 46 (38) as the pressure of dot balls and non-boundary balls finally claims a victim. MI are 129/4 after 15.5 overs as umpires call a strategic time out.

Tim David comes in to bat

The genius leg spinner conceded just 5 runs in the over as he ended the over with 3 dot balls. MI are 126/3 after 15 overs, need 43 runs to win

9 runs came of the 14th over as Brevis and Varma are ensuring they keep the scoreboard ticking with singles and doubles. MI are 121/3 after 14 overs, need 48 runs to win 6 overs

Tilak Varma chops Mohit Sharma very close to his stumps as the ball misses the woodwork and races away past the short fine leg fielder to the boundary. As the saying goes, it doesn't matter how they come as long as they come.

Sai Sudarshan closed out his spell with a superb over, conceding 5 runs and picking the very important scalp of Rohit Sharma. He ends with figures of 1/24 after 4 overs. A very tidy performance from the Tamil Nadu all-rounder. MI are 112/3 after 13 overs.

The MI talisman's luck lasted only 1 ball as Sai Sudarshan picks up Rohit Sharma out lbw as MI lose their 3rd wicket. Rohit misses the sweep and the umpire raises his finger. Sharma is dismissed for 43 of 29 balls as MI are 107/3 after 12.1 overs. Tilak Varma comes out to bat

Mohit Sharma's first over goes for 12 runs. Rohit Sharma checks a shot back to the bowler, whose diving effort is in vain as the ball goes straight out of his hand. MI are 107/2 after 12 overs. They need 62 of 8 overs.

Mohit Sharma is brought in to the attack and he is welcomed with a four past the backward point region by Devald Brevis. The young gun punishes a length ball outside off stump by opening the face of his bat to steer it to the boundary

MI are 97/2 after 11 overs. This Sai Sudarshan over went for 9 runs. Brevis hit the left arm slow for a massive maximum over long off with a beautiful inside out shot.

Spencer Johnson's first over goes for 17 runs. After conceding a six and four, Johnson closed out the over with another boundary ball. Rohit Sharma capitalised on a short ball that had width, as the Indian skipper cut the bowler expertly over backward point. A diving Sai Sudarshan, who ran in from third man, was unable to stop the ball from reaching its destination. MI are 88/2 after 10 overs.

Spencer Johnson is introduced in to the attack and Brevis welcomes him with a six over deep point. The South African batter cuts the left arm bowler fiercely in to the crowd. Much needed six after a quiet period.

Two balls later, Rohit Sharma pulls Johnson for a four in the mid wicket boundary.

Sai Sudarshan is stifling with MI batters with his clever change of pace. Rohit Sharma did get a four in the over - a reverse sweep in the vacant third man region - but MI were able to get only 7 runs in total. Score is 71/2 after 9 overs

After conceding a six off the first ball to Brevis, Rashid Khan showed his prowess as he tightened the grip over the course of the next 5 balls. The 8th over went for only 9 runs. MI are 64/2 after 8 overs.

Rashid Khan is welcomed with a big six over long off. The youngster Dewald Brevis hits a free flowling lofted drive over the boundary ropes. The six was much needed after 3 tidy overs prior.

GT skipper Shubman Gill has slowed down the game a bit by introducing spinners in to the attack. The latest to have a bowl is left arm spinner Sai Sudarshan, who bowls a superb over, conceding only 3 runs. MI are 55/2 after 7 overs.

Rashid Khan has been brought into the attack as he concedes only 6 runs despite being swept by Rohit Sharma for a four. MI are 52/2 after 6 overs as the umpire have called for a strategic time out

Despite conceding a boundary in the first ball, Omarzai's over went for only 6 runs. MI are 46/2 after 5 overs

Dewald Brevis gets off the mark with a boundary. He hits a backfoot punch of Omarzai in the covers region and the ball races away to the ropes.

The Afghani pacer had the last laugh in the 3rd over as he traps Naman Dhir (20 of 10) plumb in front lbw after conceding 3 boundaries and a six. MI are 30/2 after 3 overs. Dewald Brevis comes out to bat.

Newbie Naman Dhir welcomed Omarzai with 3 consecutive boundaries in the first 3 balls of the 3rd over to remove some of the pressure. The first boundary is a lofted shot over the mid on fielder while the second one is another lofted stroke to the mid wicket boundary. The Afghanistani medium pace bowler drops his length a bit to compensate but Dhir punishes him with a pull shot past the short fine leg fielder.

However, the best shot of the over was yet to come as Dhir lofts Omarzai over the long off boundary for a big six. Dhir gloriously punishes the overpitched ball in to the crowd.

Umesh Yadav's inswinger cuts Rohit Sharma in half, whose inside edge escape wicketkeeper Saha and races away to fine leg boundary. This will definitely be considered a drop catch. However, Sharma ended the over in more confident fashion as he steps out to Yadav and hits him for the second boundary of the over in the mid wicket region. MI are 11/1 after 2 overs

The Afghanistan medium pacer picks up Ishan Kishan for 0 in the 4th ball of the first over. The left hand batter pokes one outside the off stump and Wriddhiman Saha takes the easiest of grabs in his Gloves. MI are 0/1, Naman Dhir comes in at number 3

During the mid innings interview with the broadcast commentators, Sai Sudarshan, who top scored for GT with 45, said, "The wicket is a bit tricky, and there was turn on the wicket. I think this is a good target. I enjoyed my match-up with Bumrah. Dew is also a little less today so spinners might have some say."

Hardik Pandya will be happy with his bowlers as they restricted Gujarat Titans to 168/6 in their 20 overs. The pick of the bowlers was of course Jasprit Bumrah, who put on a bowling masterclass in front of the Ahmedabad crowd. He made instant impacts throughout the game and ended with figures of 3/14 from his 4 overs. Mumbai Indians will need 169 to win in the second innings.

Another great catch from MI, this time Naman Dhir, as Rahul Tewatia (22 of 15) is out caught in the square leg boundary. Tewatia flicks one towards the leg side and the ball was travelling fast and flat. Rahul Tewatia hit 1 six and 2 fours as Luke Wood concedes 19 runs in the 18th over. GT are 154/5, how many can they get in the last 2 overs?

Debutant Luke Wood is feeling the pressure as he fires in a beamer. The umpire duly calls a no ball for height, and warns Wood, and Tewatia gets a free hit. The free hit goes for a wide, so Tewatia still has a free hit....

Rahul Tewatia releases some pressure with a big six over long off. The left handed batsmen pounces on Luke Wood and smashes an ariel drive over long off for a six. Two balls later, he cuts Wood to the vacant third man region for a four.

The very next ball he 'upper cuts' him to the same region for consecutive boundaries. These are much needed hits to the fence...

The 17th over went for just 2 runs but more importantly Bumrah picked up 2 important wickets of Sai Sudarshan and David Miller; the duo GT were banking on for getting them a good score. This could be a game changing over from India's pace spearhead. GT are 135/5 after 17 overs

MI have got the all important wicket of Sai Sudarshan. The left handed batsman flicks the ball to the square leg boundary but his shot does not have any pace at all. Tilak Varma had to run in full speed to reach the ball and the fielder takes a superb diving catch. Sudarshan is out for 45 of 39 balls. Bumrah picks 2 wickets in 3 balls.

GT are 134/5 after 16.3 overs, Rahul Tewatia comes into bat.

Just when David Miller was looking to free his, Jasprit Bumrah foxes the South African batsman with a slower ball. Miller checks his shot and the ball loops into the air. Hardik Pandya at mid off completes an easy catch. Instant impact from Bumrah yet again, GT 133/4 after 16.1 overs.

Despite a boundary, only 9 runs came off the 16th over from Gerald Coetzee. GT are 133/3 with Sudarshan (45 of 38) and Miller (12 of 10) at the crease. The duo needs to get a move on

The first over after the time out (Hardik Pandya) went for 10 runs. Sai Sudarshan is keeping up the tempo for GT. He is on 44 of 36 balls. GT are 124/3 after 15 overs

The South African has pacer picks his first wicket in his first over, breaking the promising 3rd wicket partnership. Azmatullah Omarzai (17 of 11 balls) tries to slog Coetzee over square leg but doesn't time the shot well owing to the lack of pace from the bowler. Tilak Verma completes an easy catch. Sai Sudarshan and Azmatullah Omarzai steady the ship for GT as the score reaches 100 in the 12th over.

Right hand batter Omarzai slogged the leg spinner to the long on region for a six. However, he GT batter would have had his heart in his mouth for a second as he didn't hit it cleanly, with the long on fielder putting in a full blooded jump. However, the ball was a tad bit high for him and it went for a six. 17 runs came off this over, GT are 99/2 after 11 overs.

Sai Sudarshan welcomed Piyush Chawla to the 11th over with a big six over deep square leg. The TN southpaw read the short ball early and rocked back on to his back foot to pull the ball over the boundary ropes.

Sai Sudarshan and Azmatullah Omarzai eased some pressure by hitting a boundary each in the 10th over, as 10 runs came off the over. GT are 82/2 at the halfway point and will need these two to accelerate from here on to reach a competitive score. For MI, Jasprit Bumrah and Piyush Chawla pick a wicket each with openers Widdhiman Saha and Shubman Gill the victimes.

MI have got the big fish as Shubman Gill is out caught at long on by Rohit Sharma for 31 of 22. Leg spinner Piyush Chawla flights the ball and baits Gill to dance down the track, which the GT skipper gladly did. However, it was his downfall as Gill did not time the slog well as his shot goes straight to the long on fielder Rohit Sharma, who makes no mistake with the catch.

Back to back boundaries for Wriddhiman Saha in the first 2 balls of the third over. Pandya dished out a full ball with a dose of width and Saha lapped it up by driving it past the the diving backward point fielder for four. The second one was a more conventional cover driver, which teased the fielder until the very end, with the ball trickling away to the long off boundary for a four. The dive by Luke Wood was in vain.

The captain vs captain battle gets off to a flying start. After taking strike and hitting his first ball to the fielder, Shubman Gill gets off the mark in the next ball with a flick to the fine leg region. The ball races away to the boundary for the second four of the over.

Freed from captaincy duties, 'hitman' Rohit Sharma can focus on hitting his peak form ahead of the T20I World Cup, where he will be leading India. Ishan Kishan, who has lost his place and the central contract with the BCCI, not alone for cricketing reasons, will be under tremendous pressure to perform as a wicketkeeper-batter. He ignored the BCCI directive to play domestic, Ranji Trophy cricket for his state side Jharkhand and trained on his own for the IPL.

GT also will have to do without a few key players. Pace spearhead Mohammed Shami, the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 ODI World Cup (24 in seven games), is unfortunately ruled out for the entirety of the IPL season following an ankle injury. Australian wicketkeeping batsman Matthew Wade has delayed his arrival for IPL due to his Sheffield Shield commitment back home.

Gill will turn to seasoned Umesh Yadav to make up for Shami’s absence. Veteran Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan’s presence will also strengthen the GT bowling, also bolstered by new names in the squad – Aussie left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson and Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarazai.

MI will be without some of their star players, no bigger than proven match winner with the bat, Mr 360 degree Suryakumar Yadav. Sky, as he is fondly known, has not yet received the green light from the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he is undergoing rehabilitation after an ankle surgery. MI will also be without South African all-rounder Gerald Coetzee for the first two matches owing to a groin injury, while two other overseas pacers Jason Behrendorff and Dilshan Madushanka are ruled out for the entire season due to fitness concerns.

Pandya, thankfully, has two strong options in veteran Afghan cricketer Mohammad Nabi and West Indian Romario Shepherd to back him as all-rounders.

GT's new skipper Shubman Gill has taken over the reigns at the franchise after Hardik Pandya's exit. He had a sensational IPL 2023 with the bat, aggregating 890 runs in 17 innings. However, he did benefit playing under a cool leader like Pandya. This season though he will don two hats as he will be tasked with continuing GT's streak of playing IPL finals. As they say, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. Gill will have to ensure that the additional responsibility as captain does not weight down the batter.

Hardik Pandya’s form and fitness will be under scanner as MI's new skipper will be tasked to get MI back to championship winning ways. He will also have to escape the shadows of Rohit Sharma, who has a phenomenal success rate as an IPL captain – five titles in 11 seasons. Pandya will also have to meet his own high standards, as he captained the last 2 IPL finals. With the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies set to start shortly after the IPL, Pandya’s performance with the bat and ball will be under the scanner through the season.

Pandya, who led GT to the title on their IPL debut in 2022, is back at his IPL alma mater MI, one of the two most successful teams in the tournament with five titles. Just like MI, Pandya too has five IPL trophies to his name, including the one as the GT captain. He, however, hasn’t played any competitive cricket ever since he suffered an injury at the ICC ODI World Cup in October 2023 while playing for India.

Today's epic encounter between GT and MI will be a litmus test for the two captains Shubman Gill (GT) and Hardik Pandya (MI). The spotlight is expected to shine brighter on the latter as Pandya has returned home after spending two successful seasons at GT, where he took the team to 2 finals, including winning the title in their debut season in 2022. He is now tasked to end MI’s longest title drought since 2013. Shubman Gill has taken over the reigns at GT and faces the litmus test of maintaining the the team's record of playing the IPL final in both years of its existence. There could be additional pressure on Gill, since he is a first-time captain in the IPL
