Box office collections of Jolly LLB 2 say the courtroom comedy-drama is a hit with the moviegoers. On Thursday, the movie earned Rs 5.03 crore, taking the week one collection to Rs 77.61 crore.

Makers and producers of the film hope a big second week after a positive response from the viewers and expect to reach the 100 crore mark.

On the first day of its release (February 10), Akshay Kumar’s satire on the legal system garnered Rs 13.20 crore. The Akshay Kumar-starrer gained pace over the weekend and grossed Rs 17.31 crore and 19.95 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The rebuttal between two lawyers and a judge kept the audience engaged and the movie passed its crucial Monday test and collected Rs 7.26 crore. Amid competition from Kaabil and Raees, this satirical comedy has made a mark for itself.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that the movie had an impressive first week but its performance in the second week will be crucial, which will give an estimate of its lifetime business.

The film touches upon the sensitive subject of shortage of judges within the legal system. A fact reiterated by former Chief Justice of India TS Thakur. It was not an easy journey for this sequel of Jolly LLB with the Bombay High Court standing in its way. The film had received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) but the court had demanded deletion of four scenes from the movie.

The producer of the film, Fox Studios, had appealed to the Supreme Court regarding the High Court’s demand but later took a call of releasing the film with the four cuts as sought by Mumbai High Court.

It was an unusual situation for Jolly LLB 2 as the movie faced resistance from the legal system. Courts are a respite for the movie makers who face objection from CBFC but when you point a finger at them don’t expect a ‘jolly’ time.

Risks were high this time for Subhash Kapoor who took a stronger stand against the working of the legal system. A petition, filed by an advocate, called for dropping LLB (a legal degree) from the film’s title. He also said that the film was a mockery of the judiciary.

What is important to look at is how the film will perform in its second week with three new Bollywood releases- Ghazi attack, Irada and Running Shaadi.

This week’s performance

Friday (February 10) – Rs 13.20 crore

Saturday (February 11) – Rs 17.31 crore

Sunday (February 12) – Rs 19.95 crore

Monday (February 13) – Rs 7.26 crore

Tuesday (February 14) – Rs 9.07 crore

Wednesday (February 15) – Rs 5.89 crore

Thursday (February 16) – Rs 5.03 crore
