What is mucositis?

Mucositis is a painful inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, commonly affecting the mouth and throat. It is a frequent side effect of cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or stem cell transplants, which target rapidly dividing cells, including the mucosa. This inflammation damages the protective barrier, making it harder to heal and leaving the GI tract vulnerable to irritation and infection. Oral mucositis, marked by red, swollen, and painful sores, can range from mild to severe, potentially interfering with eating and treatment. Up to 50% of chemotherapy patients and nearly all radiation patients develop mucositis.
